Who is John Baldessari?
John Baldessari is an American conceptual artist. After college he began to develop his painting style by putting letters and words in his works. By 1966 he was using photographs and text and in 1970 he worked in printmaking and video and photography. Baldessari differed from other conceptual artists in his humour and commitment to the visual image. He dramatized the ordinary, although beneath the apparent simplicity of his words and images lie multiple connotations. John Baldessari was born July 17, 1931, in National City, California. He became a central figure in the growth of Los Angeles as a major art centre. Initially he worked with what has been called the “phototext canvas,” words painted on a canvas. His interest in language-based art led him to create a great variety of works, all in some combination of words, still images, and video.
